SBI cuts interest rates for savings accounts by 0.5% to 3.5% effective today

New Delhi: India’s largest lender SBI on Monday announced a 0.5 percent (50 basis points) cut in interest rates for savings bank deposits, effective immediately.

According to the new structure, for saving deposits balance up to Rs 1 crore, SBI will offer a rate of 3.5 percent as compared to 4 percent earlier, the bank said.

"The decline in rate of inflation and high real interest rates are the primary considerations warranting a revision," SBI said.

The revision would enable the bank to maintain its Marginal Cost of funds-based Lending Rate (MCLR) at existing rates, the lender added.

The bank`s overnight MCLR rate, effective July 1, currently stands at 7.75 percent.

Shares of the bank spiked after the announcement, climbing as much as 4.75 percent.

State Bank of India had earlier cut its term deposit rates by up to 50 basis points for various maturities.

Rains lash Telangana, Andhra Pradesh; normal life hit in Hyderabad

Hyderabad/Vijayawada: Incessant rains for the second consecutive day on Tuesday affected normal life in Hyderabad and some towns in Telangana and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

Some low-lying areas in Hyderabad were inundated while roads were flooded, causing traffic jams.

Heavy rains also threw normal life out of gear in Vijayawada. Low-lying areas were inundated, causing hardships to people. The downpour led to traffic jams in several busy areas in and around the city, including the road which connects Vijayawada to Amaravati, the upcoming state capital of Andhra Pradesh.

For the second time this season, rain water entered Andhra Pradesh Secretariat at Velagapudi in Amaravati. The Secretariat building was leaking at a few points and affected offices.

Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana, however, claimed that there are no defects in the SEcretariat`s construction.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy rain at a few places and very heavy rain to extremely heavy rain at isolated places is "very likely to occur" in all the districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next two days.

Heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in all districts of Telangana also are very likely during the period, the IMD said.

Indian banks face $37 billion hit from top 50 stressed assets: CRISIL

Mumbai: Indian banks may have to write off 60 percent of the value of bad loans from their 50 large stressed asset accounts, or a hit of 2.4 trillion rupees ($37.31 billion), ratings agency CRISIL said on Wednesday.

The 50 stressed companies, which account for 4 trillion rupees in soured loans, are largely from the metals, construction and power industries and account for nearly half of the total non-performing assets in the banking sector as of the end of March, CRISIL said.

Banks had total non-performing loans of about 7.29 trillion rupees, or 5 percent of India`s gross domestic product, as of end-March.

The report comes after rival India Ratings and Research had estimated banks taking 12 of the country`s largest defaulters to bankruptcy court would need to make additional provisioning of at least 180 billion rupees.
